We have all been children. That is a fact. That child may have gone through negative issues such as disappointments, rejections, abuse, neglect, and embarrassment. He/she also has had wonderful, positive experiences such as happiness, pride in reaching goals, a doting parent, and other cheerful moments. These experiences, both challenging and uplifting, have helped to shape you as an adult. Your inner child is, in essence, the child that you were and who is still a part of your daily life. That child might have held on to parts of the past that you, as an adult, maybe have tried to forget or move past. Those memories affect your current life and how you act and react to situations, people, and emotions.
The key to healing from the negative feelings, or immersing yourself in the joy, of your childhood is to take the time to get to know your inner child. Tapping into this part of your personality is crucial. Since the experiences were yours, they are locked within you. Listening is important. Hear the hurt. Hear the laughter. Hear the disappointment. Hear the joy. Acknowledging and paying attention to your inner child is the first step.
In order to quiet the mind and tap into your inner child, meditation is a wonderful tool. Through mindful breathing and focus, you can quiet your mind and reconnect with your inner child. Children have an innocence that allows them to feel pure joy in the present moment. This gift can get lost as we transition into adulthood. Our minds are easily bounced around from what to make for dinner to work responsibilities to bills, etc. Quieting the mind through meditation can take you back to that childlike ability to live in the moment.
How wonderful it would be to see the world in a true childlike way with the wonder, hopefulness, and excitement? Well, here at Monarch Wellness we have our “Inner Child Workshop” with Salima Silverman. It is dedicated to guiding you on tapping into your inner child through meditation and yogic techniques. Call us at 239-231-3208 for additional information and to sign up. This workshop will be at our central Naples office which is located at 843 Myrtle Terrace, Naples, Florida 34103.
As we age, we become more and more concerned with our health. Which makes sense since the body is similar to a machine and parts and pieces age and breakdown over time. You may go to the gym, take more vitamins, eat healthier and other healthy lifestyle activities to ward off the signs of aging. Have you, however, taken into account the process of aging on your brain health?
Brain health has become more prominent in the media and in research. Alzheimer’s disease is a that affects 5.4 million Americans, with an estimated 5.2 million over the age of 65 years old. Alzheimer’s disease is a type of dementia that causes memory loss that can severely affect the patient’s life.
Unlike parts of the body that normally breakdown such as eyes, hearing, and bone density, dementia is not a normal part of aging. Aging, however, is a large risk factor in succumbing to dementia.
There are some natural ways that you can try to ward off memory loss by catering to your brain’s health. Incorporate these suggestions into your lifestyle to improve brain functioning:
Eating a diet that is rich in lean meats, fruits, and veggies will give your brain the nutrition it needs and also decrease inflammation. Dark berries, green tea, ginger, omega-3 rich fish, soy, olive oil, coffee, and nuts are all brain boosting.
Stimulate your brain by learning something new. Activities that make you think and challenge you such as learning a new language, playing a musical instrument, and reading help to reduce your risk.
Vitamin D from the sunshine has been linked to a reduced risk of dementia.
Reduce stress in your life through healthy activities such as meditation and yoga. Also, make sure that you get sufficient sleep since this will help your mind stay alert.
These are just a few of the many natural ways that you can boost your brain health. Monarch Wellness has a main location at 843 Myrtle Terrace, Naples, Florida 34103. Here you can find counselors, yoga classes, integrative health workshops, meditation classes, and more.
Every generation has its own struggles. Our current, youngest generation is growing up in a world surrounded by social media and technology. With a gadget at every turn, one can lose one’s self in the constant inundation of images, videos, and social media comments. These are issues that previous generations did not have to confront while growing up. In addition to these outside influences, children still need to go through the same self-discovery and growing up stages that all generations in years past had to do. With the additional stressors, it is important that children have the confidence to move through these stages and take on new challenges. Wellness classes can help.
To be happy, healthy functioning adults, children will have to navigate through the ups and downs of life. Some experiences will have a negative impact, whereas others will have a positive. Young children have fears, can experience anxiety and depression, and have self-doubt, but their coping skills are not as developed as an adult. This is where parents, teachers, and caregivers can impart a positive influence.
Introducing positive wellness classes early in children’s lives gives them more self-confidence and improves self-esteem in their daily life. Through the focused breathing of meditation and yoga, children can learn new coping skills. Relaxation techniques can be advantageous to them in situations of stress such as a speech for class or a big test. Having a pocketful of new coping strategies is also helpful in social situations and family dynamics such as getting along with siblings and parents.
Here at Monarch Wellness, we are offering our 4-week Confident Caterpillars class with Salima Silverman. This class is designed for children ages 5-12 who could benefit from gaining some extra self-confidence through movement, breath, sound, and relaxation. This class is held at our Central Naples located at 843 Myrtle Terrace, Naples, Florida 34103. Call us at 239-231-3208 for additional information or visit us online.
We all know that feeling we get when we have a giggling fit, laugh with friends, or even see something funny on Facebook that makes us guffaw. What you are feeling is a physiological change in your body. With laughter, your body releases hormones and uses muscles that benefit your body and mind.
Laughter has recently been compared to the positive effects that exercise has on the body. Many studies have been conducted on this topic, all concluding the same results. Here is how laughter helps your body and mind:
Overall wellbeing: laughter has been shown to release endorphins, just like exercise does. This could be the reason that laughing can also reduce the intensity of pain for those who suffer.
Immune booster: laughing boosts your immune system by decreasing stress hormones and increasing antibodies that fight disease and infections.
Social benefits: just like going to the gym and lifting weights with friends or meeting people in an aerobics class, laughing is a social activity. Laughing tends to be with other people. This fills your need for social interaction with family and friends in a positive way.
Negative emotions are kicked to the side when you laugh. It is hard to be sad or angry when you are laughing. It is a great mood-lifter.
Laughing is a relaxing activity. You will find that after you have a good belly laugh that you will still be relaxed a half hour later.
Laughing helps your organs out. It increases your intake of oxygen which benefits your lungs, muscles, heart and brain.
If you find that it is difficult to find something funny to laugh about, just start with a simple smile. From there, just give a little laugh even if you have to force it. Sometimes, just by starting to laugh, you will continue the laughter until your giggling so much that you don’t remember why you started. Try to surround yourself with other people who enjoy laughing and see the lightness in life. Your body and mental wellbeing will thank you for it.

Just like anything we wear, drive, or eat, yoga mat preference is specific to the individual. When you begin your yoga practice, it is important for you to find the perfect “fit” for you when it comes to the mat on which you will perform your asanas. Take into account these features when searching for […]
It is scientifically proven that all matter vibrates. Some vibrate at higher frequencies, while others vibrate at lower levels. This is its resonant frequency. Every part of your body, including your cells, tissues, bones, and organs have a resonant frequency. When it is out of sync with its normal level, that is when the body […]

Just like anything we wear, drive, or eat, yoga mat preference is specific to the individual. When you begin your yoga practice, it is important for you to find the perfect “fit” for you when it comes to the mat on which you will perform your asanas.
Take into account these features when searching for your mat:
Thickness: you will find that basic mats have a thickness of 1/8” but for those of you who like more cushioning, 1/4” yoga mats are available. The thickness of the mat can affect your practice more than you would think. If you like to feel a strong connection to the floor, then a thinner type will suit you. But, if you need more cushioning to make it easier on your body during certain asanas, then the thicker type would be for you.
Length: the length of the mat really only affects you if you are a tall person. You don’t want to find yourself constantly half-way onto the gym floor for most of the poses. During yoga practice, you will find that you are stretching in every direction. If you are a very tall person, then you may need an extra-long yoga mat for poses such as Warrior II or Downward Dog where you may need the extra room to stretch.
Color & Style: the color and/or pattern of the yoga mat is the fun part of selecting the mat. This is where you can express your individuality. Some people choose mats with a full array of colors with intricate patterns, while some choose muted, quiet colors. Possibly have a mat for different types of classes. For a relaxing candlelight yoga class, bring a solid, muted color, whereas for a kundalini yoga class you might want to bring a vibrant one.
Material: you will find that the majority of mats are made of PVC, or vinyl, but other options are available. Natural rubber, jute, and cotton are other ones to consider. Some companies provide eco-friendly yoga mats if you do not want synthetic finishes applied during the manufacturing stage. If you are allergic to latex, then stay away from natural rubber.
Stickiness: to avoid slipping and falling during difficult asanas such as triangle pose, you will want to consider the “stickiness” of the mat. Most mats that are non-slip will indicate it on their packaging.
Texture: while shopping for your mat, make sure to notice the texture. Some of them are bumpy, some are smooth. This is a personal preference. If you are sensitive to textures, then pay attention to this aspect of the mat. You want to be comfortable while learning a new asana.
As you can see, the type of yoga mat really comes down to personal preference. Shop around at local stores or online. Prices range from mid-teens to a couple hundred dollars. If you will be attending classes a lot, then it makes sense to invest in a higher quality mat. If you are new to yoga and trying it out, then maybe purchase the lower cost mat until you know if yoga is right for you.

Is there such a thing as the “perfect” family? No, there is not. Families are composed of different personalities all working together to create a life that is successful and happy.
